History

In 1976, adjacent to the port of Khorramshahr, the Faculty of Marine Science was founded with the objective of becoming the focal point for marine sciences, both nationally and internationally. Unfortunately, only two years after its establishment, this newly-founded center was completely destroyed, becoming the first structural casualty of the Iraq-Iran war. This institution recommenced academic activities in 1993 with the enrollment of 10 graduate students in the fields of physical oceanography and marine biology as the Faculty of Marine Science and Oceanography of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz.

In 1998, with the start of the Reconstruction Program of the war-torn cities of Khorramshahr and Abadan, this establishment relaunched its educational activities in Khorramshahr as Shahid Chamran University's Southern Branch, admitting undergraduate students in the fields of marine biology, environmental science and fisheries.

Because of the history and long-term goals defined for this faculty as well as the efforts made by the then authorities and based on the December 7th, 2002 directive of the Higher Education Expansion Committee, this institution gained independence from Shahid Chamran University, becoming Khorramshahr University of Marine Science and Technology in 2003.

Benefiting from a dedicated and experienced team of faculty and staff members, this university has continued striving towards academic excellence. Access to open waters, rivers (the Bahmanshir and the Arvand) and wetlands (the Shadegan and the Hor-Al-Azim) are among the distinctive features that make Khorramshahr University of Marine Science and Technology unique compared to other institutions in the region.

In 2006, the Faculty of Marine Engineering was founded and the fact that this university is located in the Arvand Free Zone led to the birth of the University's Campus for International Students in 2011. This campus has created the opportunity to enroll international students, expanding the university's academic scope.

At present, Khorramshahr University of Marine Science and Technology operates academically through the Faculty of Marine Science and Oceanography, the Faculty of Marine Natural Resources, the Faculty of Economics and Management, the Faculty of Marine Engineering and the Campus for International Students as well as the Marine Research Center and the University’s Incubator.
